Ishikawa, Japan – June 3, 2024 – An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.0 struck Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan early this morning. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) the quake occurred at approximately 6:31 am local time (11:31 pm IST on June 2nd) and was centered off the Noto Peninsula.
There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or widespread damage. However, the cities of Wajima and Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture experienced tremors with an intensity of upper 5 on the Japan Meteorological Agency’s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from 0 to 7. This level of shaking can cause furniture to overturn and minor damage to buildings.
Following the initial quake, a series of aftershocks were reported, including a 4.8-magnitude tremor just minutes later. The JMA has assured residents there is no danger of a tsunami.
Ishikawa Still Recovering from January Quake
This earthquake comes just over five months after a powerful tremor struck the same region on January 1, 2024. That quake caused widespread damage and several fatalities. Local authorities report that five homes previously damaged in the January quake collapsed following today’s tremors.
The Ishikawa Prefectural Government is currently assessing the damage and providing assistance to those affected.
Residents Urged to Remain Cautious
While the initial threat appears to have subsided, the JMA advises residents to remain cautious and be prepared for potential aftershocks. They recommend following safety protocols in case of further tremors.
