Tata Nexon CNG: A Greener Option for India’s SUV Market

Tata Motors has officially launched the much-awaited Tata Nexon CNG in India, expanding its portfolio in the eco-friendly vehicle segment. The Nexon CNG adds another feather to Tata’s lineup of CNG-powered cars, which includes models like the Tata Tiago and Tigor. This new variant aims to offer Indian consumers a greener and more economical alternative to traditional petrol and diesel engines without compromising on performance and features.

Price

The Tata Nexon CNG is priced competitively, starting at approximately ₹9.60 lakh (ex-showroom). The price may vary slightly depending on the variant and additional features. The new CNG variant is positioned as an affordable option for environmentally conscious buyers who are also looking for cost-effective ownership, especially with rising fuel prices.

Engine and Specifications

The Tata Nexon CNG is powered by a 1.2-liter Revotron turbocharged petrol engine that is adapted to run on CNG as well. When running on petrol, the engine produces 118 bhp of power and 170 Nm of torque, while the CNG mode reduces power output slightly for better efficiency. In CNG mode, the Nexon produces around 90 bhp. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, as the automatic transmission is not available with the CNG variant.

  • Engine: 1.2-liter Revotron Turbocharged petrol-CNG
  • Power (Petrol): 118 bhp
  • Power (CNG): 90 bhp
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual
  • Fuel Efficiency: Around 25-30 km/kg (CNG mode)

The vehicle’s CNG tank is placed in the boot, with a capacity of around 60 liters, allowing for long drives without frequent refueling stops.

Features

The Tata Nexon CNG comes with most of the features that are available in the regular petrol and diesel models. Here are some of the key features:

  • Infotainment System: The Nexon CNG offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice commands.
  • Safety Features: Tata has equipped the Nexon CNG with safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and electronic stability control (ESC). Tata’s reputation for safety is well-established, and Nexon continues this legacy by offering 5-star safety ratings in crash tests.
  • Comfort and Convenience: The car comes with automatic climate control, rear AC vents, keyless entry, push-button start, and an electric sunroof in higher variants. Rear seats are 60:40 split-folding, allowing flexibility in cargo space.

Exterior and Interior Design

The Tata Nexon CNG retains its sporty and robust design, similar to its petrol and diesel counterparts. The SUV features Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language, offering a muscular front grille, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, and 16-inch alloy wheels that give it a premium look.

Inside, the Nexon CNG carries forward Tata’s attention to detail with high-quality materials and ergonomically designed seats. The cabin offers ample space for both front and rear passengers, with decent legroom and headroom.

Performance and Driving Experience

While the Tata Nexon CNG may not offer the same level of power as its petrol or diesel variants, it still delivers a smooth driving experience. The transition between petrol and CNG modes is seamless, and drivers will hardly notice the difference when switching. The SUV also maintains its composure over rough terrains, thanks to its high ground clearance and well-tuned suspension.

The fuel efficiency of the CNG variant is a major selling point. With an estimated mileage of around 25-30 km/kg, the Nexon CNG is a great option for long-distance commuters or anyone looking to save on fuel costs.

In the CNG SUV space, the Tata Nexon CNG will compete with models like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG, Hyundai Venue CNG, and other upcoming CNG SUVs in the sub-4-meter segment. However, with its competitive pricing, strong feature set, and Tata’s reputation for safety, the Nexon CNG is poised to attract a significant number of buyers.

The Tata Nexon CNG is a timely addition to Tata’s growing lineup of eco-friendly vehicles. With its blend of fuel efficiency, modern features, and competitive pricing. It is expected to appeal to a wide range of consumers looking for an affordable yet stylish CNG-powered SUV. The Nexon CNG is an excellent option for those who want to contribute to reducing their carbon footprint without compromising on driving pleasure or safety.
